Yarn Size & Weight Guide

Every yarn in our store is labeled with its Craft Yarn Council weight. Use this table to pair yarns with the right needle or hook, or to substitute yarns in a pattern with confidence.

How to read a yarn label

  • Weight symbol (0–7) tells you the yarn category.
  • Length per ball is more useful than grams when substituting yarns.
  • Recommended gauge is a starting point — always swatch on your own needles.
  • Fiber Content drives drape, warmth and washing.
  • Dye lot — buy all the yarn you need for a project in the same dye lot for consistent color.

Substituting yarns

When swapping the yarn in a pattern, match weight and total meterage first, then match fiber if drape matters (a cotton sweater will hang very differently from a wool one at the same gauge).
